ASE GF-2 : Ground Fault Indication Unit, GFPE protection for (2) 120/208/240VAC circuits up to 60A, NEMA 4X/IP65 rated enclosure
Both the National Electrical Code and Canadian Electrical Code mandate the use of a ground fault protection equipment (GFPE) breaker. Compliance with these codes is essential. However, finding a genuine 30mA trip point GFPE breaker can be challenging. Even if you manage to locate one suitable for your specific load center, be prepared for the hassle of special ordering, long lead times, and high costs. In the case of older homes, it may not even be possible to find a GFPE breaker. While substituting a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) may offer some protection, its high sensitivity can lead to false trips, potentially causing damage to non-functioning snow melt systems.
To address these issues, the ASE GF-1 and GF-2 offer an affordable and easily integrable solution for meeting GFPE requirements. Each GF unit provides GFPE protection for one (GF-1) or two (GF-2) 120/208/240VAC circuits with a maximum of 60A. The unique design allows for the installation of a standard overload breaker, readily available in the market, into the customer's load center. You can size the breaker and wiring according to your system requirements, ranging from 15A to 60A. Then, simply install the GF unit between the load center branch circuit and the sensor/controller and heat cable. The overload breaker safeguards the wiring while our GF unit offers the necessary Ground Fault Protection.
The unit is housed in a rugged enclosure with a NEMA 4X/IP65 rating, making it suitable for indoor or outdoor mounting. The enclosure features a gasket-sealed front access door for easy testing and resetting. All internal electronic components are designed to operate within the temperature range of -40oC to +60oC. You can easily surface mount the enclosure near the load center or the snow melt system, depending on your preference. The enclosure offers multiple knockout locations, ensuring flexibility in installation and wiring. The base of the enclosure can accommodate standard 1/2" and 3/4" conduit hubs. Mounting the unit is effortless with four holes located outside the enclosure gasket, ensuring both ease of installation and weatherproof performance.
The GF-1 and GF-2 units can be used directly with our DS series sensors and can also be utilized with contactor panels, switches, or any system up to 60A. As the overload protection is provided by the load center breaker, only two GF models are required to cover the entire range of 15A to 60A for one or two circuits. This approach keeps stocking costs low and allows for the inclusion of ground fault protection in kitted systems without the need to identify the customer's load center type or research the availability, lead time, and cost of a combined overload/GFPE breaker. In most cases, a conventional overload circuit breaker is locally available, in stock, and reasonably priced. By including a GF unit in the snow melt kit, the system becomes complete and ready for installation. Moreover, the GF unit offers a convenient solution when installing or retrofitting a snow melt system in an older facility wired long before the term "GFPE" was coined. It is a straightforward upgrade that helps bring existing systems into compliance with modern code requirements.
Important Note: The GF-1 and GF-2 units can handle up to 60A, but the conductor capacity is limited to #14 AWG-#6 AWG copper wire only.
