The Miljoco-Weiss SF5VBM6-120 is a silicone filled vari-angle bimetal dial thermometer with a 5″ 304 stainless steel case, a 6″ stem and a -20/120°F & -30/50°C dual-scale range, accurate to ±1.0% of full range per ASME B40.200.

The adjustable 304 stainless steel Vari-Angle bracket lets the dial be positioned so the scale faces the operator. The manufacturer advises adjusting the clevis only as needed during installation or removal of the thermometer.

Its case is silicone liquid filled, a factory option listed under OPTIONS on the 5VBM datasheet. Temperature is sensed by a precision-formed bimetallic element with silicone dampening to maximize response time, and the pointer is reset using the external recalibrator on the rear of the case.

Specifications on this page are taken from the 5VBM Series datasheet, revision 5VBM-01.24. Dimensional data from the 3″ and 5″ Vari-angle submittal drawing (2007). Operating limits from IOM Form 124-0306-05.

Markets

The manufacturer lists this series for the following markets.

  • Heavy process equipment
  • Industrial petrochemical
  • Oil and gas
  • Pulp and paper processing
  • Wastewater processing
  • Food processing

A thermowell must be used on any application where the stem may be exposed to pressure, corrosive fluids or high velocity. A thermowell also allows the instrument to be exchanged or calibration-checked without shutting down the process.

Thermowells are a separate factory option and are not supplied with this thermometer. Consult the Weiss Thermowell Data Sheet for selection.

Key Features

5″ hermetically sealed case

304 stainless steel case, hermetically sealed, with a 304 stainless steel ring and gasket and a heavy strength glass window.

Accuracy ±1.0% of full range

Accuracy is stated to ±1.0% of full range per ASME B40.200 (B40.3 Grade A).

Adjustable Vari-Angle connection

A 304 stainless steel adjustable bracket allows the dial to be angled so the scale can be read from the working position.

External recalibrator

An external recalibrator on the rear of the case allows the pointer to be reset without opening the instrument.

Silicone dampened element

A precision-formed bimetallic element with silicone dampening maximizes response time.

Silicone liquid filled case

The case is silicone liquid filled. A liquid filled case carries a lower maximum case temperature than a dry case.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range does the SF5VBM6-120 cover?

The dial is graduated -20/120°F & -30/50°C, with a 20° figure interval and 2° minor graduations. The maximum dial reading is 120°F.

What is the stem length and process connection?

The stem is 6″ long including the thread, 0.250″ in 300 series stainless steel, and the process connection is 300 series stainless steel, 1/2 NPT.

How hot can the process be on this model?

Do not expose the stem to a temperature above the maximum dial reading of 120°F. Separately, no bimetal thermometer should be exposed continuously to process temperatures over 800°F (425°C).

How is the dial angle adjusted?

Loosen all four screws in the clevis assembly and rotate the assembly until the dial face can be tilted in the direction required, then tighten the two long clevis screws. Next, set the dial face angle by holding the stem and moving the face to the desired angle, and tighten the small clevis screws to lock it in place. The manufacturer advises adjusting the instrument only as needed during installation or removal.

Does this thermometer need a thermowell?

A thermowell must be used on any application where the stem may be exposed to pressure, corrosive fluids or high velocity. A thermowell also allows the instrument to be exchanged or calibration-checked without shutting down the process. Thermowells are a separate factory option and are not supplied with this thermometer. Consult the Weiss Thermowell Data Sheet for selection.

How should the thermometer be tightened?

Tighten using an open-end wrench on the hexagonal head of the threaded connection. Do not tighten by turning the thermometer case.

Can the pointer be recalibrated in the field?

Yes. An external recalibrator is fitted to the rear of the case. Turn the slotted hex reset with a small wrench, screwdriver or coin until the pointer reads correctly against a calibration bath or dry block operating at a known temperature.

What is the case temperature limit on a silicone filled model?

The SF5VBM6-120 has a silicone liquid filled case, and the instruction sheet limits a liquid filled case to 150°F against 200°F for a dry case. That limit governs rather than the wider series ambient figure.
