The AimSafety PM400-IR is a rechargeable four-gas portable monitor that simultaneously detects carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), oxygen (O2) and combustible gas (LEL) using an infrared LEL sensor, with 60 days continuous runtime on a single charge.

Specifications on this page are taken from the PM400 Series Data Sheet (Macurco, 1/2026), PM400 Multi-Gas Personal Monitor User Manual Rev. 2.0 and the AimSafety line card.

Best For

Confined space entry and hot-work permitting in oil and gas, pipeline compression, refining and chemical production, water and wastewater treatment, food and beverage, metal manufacturing, pulp and paper, power generation, municipalities, construction and first response.

Warranty

Two year limited warranty. AimSafety warrants the product free from defective materials and workmanship for a period of two years, provided it is maintained and used in accordance with AimSafety instructions and recommendations.

Key Features

Infrared LEL sensor is immune to poisoningThe infrared combustible sensor is not degraded by silicones, sulfides or lead compounds that poison catalytic bead elements, so the LEL channel keeps reading in contaminated atmospheres.
Reads combustibles in inert, low-oxygen atmospheresUnlike a catalytic bead pellistor, the infrared sensor does not need oxygen to burn the sample, so the PM400-IR measures LEL inside nitrogen-purged and other oxygen-deficient spaces.
60 days of continuous runtime per chargeThe rechargeable lithium-ion pack supports 60 days of continuous operation on the infrared version, against 24 hours for the catalytic bead PM400-P.
Two months of one-minute data logging plus event historyData is logged continuously at one-minute intervals, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for two months, alongside 30 events, 30 calibrations and 30 bump tests.
IP67 dust-tight and water-resistant housingThe rugged high-visibility polycarbonate and rubber housing carries an IP67 rating for dust ingress and temporary water immersion.
Single-button operation with three-tier alarmsOne button drives the whole interface. Unsafe concentrations trigger the 90 dB buzzer, flashing red LEDs, vibration and an on-screen alarm icon with backlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gases does the AimSafety PM400-IR detect?

It simultaneously detects four gases: carbon monoxide (CO) from 0 to 500 ppm, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from 0 to 100 ppm, oxygen (O2) from 0 to 30 % by volume, and combustible gas (LEL) from 0 to 100 % LEL.

What is the difference between the PM400-IR and the PM400-P?

Both monitors detect the same four gases. The PM400-IR uses an infrared LEL sensor, which is immune to poisoning, works in inert low-oxygen atmospheres, carries a sensor life greater than 5 years and runs 60 days per charge. The PM400-P uses a catalytic bead (pellistor) LEL sensor with a sensor life greater than 2 years and 24 hours of runtime per charge.

How long does the PM400-IR run on a single charge?

60 days continuous on a single charge of its rechargeable 3.7 V lithium-ion battery.

Is the PM400-IR approved for hazardous locations?

Yes. It is UL and CSA approved for Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C and D, T4, and for Class I, Zone 0, AEx ia IIC T4 Ga. It also carries IECEx Ex ia IIC T4 Ga.

Can the PM400-IR sensors and battery be replaced?

Macurco documentation is not consistent on servicing the PM400. The PM400 Series Data Sheet lists field-replaceable sensors and AimSafety catalogues replacement sensors and battery packs by part number, but the PM400 Multi-Gas Personal Monitor User Manual Rev. 2.0 states that the battery and sensor should not be replaced because the PM400 is designed to be disposable, and that changing them may impair intrinsic safety and void the warranty. The PM400 Quick Start Guide states that charging or replacing the battery should be done in a safe area and that using components not authorised by the manufacturer will void the warranty. The manual's maintenance section adds that the unit should not be disassembled, repaired or modified, that only replacement parts from the supplier should be used, and that substituting components may impair intrinsic safety. Confirm the intended service path with Macurco before replacing a sensor or battery on a monitor already in service. The infrared LEL sensor is catalogued as 70-2900-0540-4, the combined CO / H2S sensor as 70-2900-0540-1 and the battery pack as 70-2900-0532-2.

How is the PM400-IR bump tested and calibrated?

The PM400-STN bump test and calibration station tests, configures and updates firmware on up to four PM400 monitors at a time without a computer. The PM Link PC interface performs zero and span calibration, configuration and log retrieval from a Windows PC.

What is the warranty on the AimSafety PM400-IR?

Two year limited warranty, provided the monitor is maintained and used in accordance with AimSafety instructions and recommendations.
